Summer Writing? Make it fun!

Whether your student is in summer school or at home, writing daily is a great habit for your student to develop! There are so many benefits to writing every day, not to mention it will help make your kiddo(s) a better writer (and reader)! Setting up a summer classroom writing center or an at-home writing area isn’t difficult, and doesn’t have to cost much money. All you need is paper and something to write with. Have a box or space for writing paper; lined, unlined, construction paper, and colored paper are all fun options. You can check out this post for other fun and easy ideas for setting up a writing station or writing center!

Summer Writing Ideas #1: Ghost Writing

Ghost Writing was always a super hit in my classroom! You will need white paper, white crayons (Amazon Affiliate Link), and markers. Students use their white crayons to write on the white paper. Then, they use a marker to color over the top of the crayon writing and it now can be seen! Perfect for sending “secret messages” to each other! This is also a fun way to practice writing spelling words, or sight words. Your kiddos will LOVE it!

#2: Summer Journal

Another fun idea for summer writing is to have your student(s) keep a summer journal. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just some pages stapled together. The idea is to have your kiddo write every day even if it is just a little. It’s fun to keep all the writing in one place, so you can look back at the writing progress made over the summer!

Composition notebooks also make great journals! You can find special composition notebooks that have space for a picture and primary writing lines! Make these extra helpful with a handwriting chart, a sight word list, and some pictures to cut out and use. Summer journals are also more fun with “souvenirs” from their summer! Stickers, labels from fun snacks, ticket stubs, postcards, photos, etc. Make it into a summer scrapbook!

Summer Writing Ideas #3: Summer Bucket List

Have your students make a Summer Bucket List of things that they would like to do this summer. They make a list of things that they want to see, places they want to go, things they want to do, and books they want to read. This also makes an awesome pre-writing activity. They can write about all of the things that they have on their bucket list!

Here are some ideas: Students can make a travel poster for a place they want to visit. They can write a postcard from a place that they have been. They can write a book review for a book that they read, or a commercial for a book that they want to read!

#4: Travel Posters

Have your students create travel posters for a place that they have been! They can make a travel poster for the park, the playground, or the cafeteria. Your students who are frequent fliers to the nurse could make one for the nurse’s office. Show students an example of a travel poster, and what information you would like them to include.

You could also have your students create travel posters for books they read or topics you are studying in your curriculum! Super fun way to understand what your students are retaining!

Summer Writing Ideas #5: Summer Mini-Books

Kiddos LOVE making mini-books! They can use these fun summer mini-book templates to write about whatever they want!

Have something in mind? Do your students need more structure? These are also editable, so you can add pictures, a title, writing prompts, etc. before you print or make copies.

You could also add some fun writing implements to make these even more fun! Students could use magazine cut-outs, stickers (Amazon Affiliate Link), glitter gel pens (Amazon Affiliate Link), stampers, and stencils make any writing activity more fun!

BONUS! #6: Fun Summer Writing Prompts with Pictures!

We all have that student that still doesn’t know what to write about even if you have given every suggestion you can think of! These fun picture writing prompts will have your students up and writing in no time. Students will choose a character, a setting, and a plot (or problem). Then, they write a story about them! Super fun, interesting pictures that will help spark your kiddo’s imagination! These fun picture prompts come in a variety of formats to fit your classroom needs! Check them out to learn more!
