1. Mentor Text for Teaching or Reviewing Syllables in Words

So, I teach 2nd graders and at this point in the year, MOST of them understand what syllables are.  But, not all of them do, and some could use a refresher!

I use this Mentor Text to get us into a syllable counting frame of mind.  I LOVE this book.
It is so much fun to read and clap along to!

We read and clap and count the syllables in the words.  It is such a fun book!  It is one of the most popular books in my classroom! We often read it several times to see if we can get faster!

2. Mentor Text for Teaching Haiku

After we have a good handle on syllables and counting syllables in a word, we move on to reading the book Dogku by Andrew Clements.  This is another adorable and wildly popular book in my classroom!  It is written entirely in Haiku.  As we read, we count the syllables just to make sure that Mr. Clements did it correctly.  😉  The dog in this book is just too cute and by the end, the kiddos are really excited about writing their own Haikus.

After reading and counting, we talk more about what a haiku is and how to write one.
I model writing a few (correctly and incorrectly).  The kiddos talk about what they want to write their poems about and use the poem frame to write it out!  I encourage them to write more than one!
Here is your Haiku Frame Freebie!
