Best Classroom Seating Arrangement?

What is the best classroom seating arrangement?

Today I wanted to talk about seating.  I have seen TONS of blog posts, Instagram pics, and Facebook Posts about flexible seating in the classroom!  It is all a buzz in the teaching world!

Flexible seating? Traditional Seating in the classroom? Let me offer you my compromise: hybrid seating. All the flexibility of classroom seating, but with kiddos all having their own personal space!

So, what is the best classroom seating arrangement? Whatever works for you! Here is what is going on in my classroom.

I have wanted to try flexible seating in my classroom for years!

The problem?

1.  Storage.  There was no place in our schoolhouse to store all of the desks that I didn’t want.

2. We have recently gone 1:1 with Chromebooks and I needed the kiddos to have a place where they could put/use their Chromebooks without fear of damage.

3. Some kiddos REALLY like having their own desk space.

4. Where in the world would we put all of our stuff?

I decided that the only thing to do was…

BOTH!

Flexible Seating, Alternative Seating, Traditional Seating

I think that it is the best of both worlds!
So, in my classroom, each child has his/her own desk.  They also have a seat sack on their chair and their book boxes.

All of their “stuff” goes in their seat sack…notebooks, pencils, crayons, etc.

All of their reading stuff goes in their book boxes: books, reading notebook, clipboard…etc.

All of their computer-related stuff: Chromebook, mouse, headphones…goes in their desk.

This is their “home base”. This is where we go to indicate that we are ready to go! When we are going anywhere, I know that they are ready when they are standing behind their chairs at their desks.

For several activities, we start at our desks, and then they have the option to move to an “alternative” seating options!  Of course, there are times when we need to be at our desks, but for most activities, they can choose where they would like to work.

I am lucky enough to have several different options in my room!

I have my couch (which the kiddos LOVE), my rocking chair, several stools, plenty of the fun scoop rockers, and a few disk sleds, which the kiddos love.  Not to mention the floor itself! Every child in my classroom has a clipboard that they can use as a working surface so they can work anywhere in the room!

Of course, the kiddos are always welcome to work at their desks as well.

Traditional Seating, Alternative seating, flexible seating!

Who doesn’t like to get under their desk to read, write, or do math?

I love the flexibility of doing it this way!  It does take some practice and rules, but the kiddos love the flexibility of choosing their own seats, whether it is their traditional desk or an alternative seat. This is the best classroom seating arrangement for my classroom.

How do you do seating in your classroom?  I would love to hear about it!

Pin it for future reference!
