Easy Classroom Writing Center Refresh for a Silly September!

A million years ago when I was a brand new baby larva teacher, I wanted to do all the things! I set up a writing center in my classroom. Then, the students used the heck out of it for 2 weeks, then never looked at it again. I had put everything that I had for writing in that center, and my students lost interest. Wah, wah! I learned that refreshing my writing center every so often piqued my students’ interest again!

So, I started doing a monthly writing center refresh! In this first post of my new blog series, I will be sharing how to refresh your writing center for a Silly September! This post does contain Amazon Affiliate links. If you purchase anything through these links I will receive a small commission at no cost to you! Thanks!

Setting Up a Classroom Writing Center

Setting up a classroom writing center doesn’t have to be hard. You can do a super simple one, or one that is “extra”, it is up to you! A classroom writing center should have paper. That is really the only item that is essential! Everything else you add is gravy and makes it more appealing to your students! If you would like more specific details or just some ideas of how to set up a classroom writing center you can check out this post!

September Writing Center Refresh!

Refreshing your writing center doesn’t have to be hard or expensive!

Add Paper

It can be as easy as adding in some different kinds of paper (Amazon Affiliate Link). A good choice for Silly September is to add in a scrap box! My students always loved “mistake” copies that I had made. They would cut out the clipart or borders, or just use the back!

Add a Novelty Item

The brain craves novelty. Adding something fun to your writing center that you will change out next month! A great novelty item for Silly September is STICKERS (Amazon Affiliate Link)! Students LOVE stickers. You will probably need to set some hard and fast rules for these as students sometimes love them a little too much, but they will definitely add interest to your writing center!

While you are adding stickers to your writing center, you could consider adding some sticker story paper! These have super fun backgrounds that your students add their stickers to, then they write the story to match!

Add some fun Picture Writing Prompts

Sometimes our students get writer’s block! By adding in some irresistible picture writing prompts your students will always have a topic! There are so many ways to use these! I like printing them in color, laminating them, and putting them on a binder ring (Amazon Affiliate Link). That way they can be used over and over again. When you are done, put them away for next September!
