Substitute Teacher Lesson Plans for Writing: Pick a Prompt

Leaving lesson plans for a substitute teacher is always a challenge. So, I started leaving these fun Picture Writing Prompts with Choices for my substitute teachers, and my students always looked forward to writing with a guest teacher because they knew they would get to use a Pick a Prompt!

Before I would have a sub, I would always do a Pick a Prompt with my Students so they knew the procedure. Here is what I would leave in my plans (you can copy and paste this into your substitute teacher lesson plans):

Hand out the Picture Writing Prompts to the students. Give them a minute to look at all of the pictures on the page. Talk about what a character is, what a setting is, and what a plot is (the problem and solution in the story).

Give the students a few minutes to turn and talk to someone close to them about which pictures they are thinking about using. Then ask the students if there are any words that they would like to use in the story. Make a list of words on the whiteboard or somewhere the students can see them. Then, let them write independently or with a partner.

When you are finished with writing time, have your students all come together and share what they wrote with a partner. Ask for 2 volunteers to read what they wrote to the class. Collect the student’s papers or have them turn them in.

Writing Lesson for the Substitute Teacher: Sticker Stories

Another fun writing lesson that you could leave for a substitute teacher is Sticker Stories. You will have to leave stickers (Amazon Affiliate Link) as well, but your students will love these! In a best-case scenario, you would have introduced these during writing or in your writing center before they were used with a sub.

Here is what I would leave in my plans (you can copy and paste this into your substitute teacher lesson plans):

Hand out the Sticker Story Background page to the students. Give them a minute to look at the background picture and talk about the setting. This is where their story will take place.

Then, put some of the stickers on a surface where the children can choose. Hand out one sticker to each student. Have students turn and talk to a partner about what they could write about with the sticker that they have and the background. Then, a few students at a time, have them go and choose 1-2 more stickers to add to their background page. Have students return to their seats and stick their stickers onto their pages.

Give the students a few minutes to turn and talk to someone close to them about the stickers on their paper.

Substitute Teacher Lesson Plans for Writing: Where is Our Teacher?

This one is a super easy substitute teacher lesson plan for writing. All the students need is a piece of writing paper with a picture box at the top. Here is what I would leave in my plans (you can copy and paste this into your substitute teacher lesson plans):

Hand out the writing paper to the students. Ask the students what the box at the top is for (a picture). Tell the students that they can write a non-fiction version of why their teacher isn’t at school (sick, Dr.’s Appointment, ect), or they could write a fiction version of why their teacher isn’t at school (went to the moon, got lost on the Amazon River, ran away to meet Taylor Swift…you get the picture).

Then talk about why they think that their teacher is not at school today. Have students turn and talk to someone sitting close to them about why they think that the teacher is not at school today.
