Engaging Descriptive Writing with Beanie Babies and a Technology Piece!

I really enjoy teaching descriptive writing to my second graders! I make it highly engaging with Secret Snacks, Beanie babies, and technology! Descriptive Writing with Beanie Babies!!!

Can you guess?

Every year at this time we work on Descriptive Writing.  One of the first activities that we do is to describe a food.  Each teacher on the second grade team (there are four of us) chooses a food to describe.  Writing lessons are always more fun when you get to eat! 🙂  Then, as a class we enjoy our snack while thinking of describing words for our treat.  Once we are finished eating, we get together to write a description.  Can you guess what our class wrote about? The Warty Pumpkin!

On Pumpkin Math day, one of the parents brought in this great pumpkin.  It was the only one that came in that had Warts!  We all agreed that it was too neat to cut open, so we saved it for Pumpkin Writing!  This was our very first day of working on Descriptive Writing.  We spent some time making a web together of all of the words that we could think of to describe our unusual pumpkin:  You can get yours here!
